The first synthetic paints were oil nitrocelluloses , introduced in the mid-1930s in New York for the automotive and construction industries (used by Mexican artists and Charles Pollock). The second type of paint, introduced in 1927, included alkyd masonry for buildings (notably used by De Kooning). Polyvinyl acetate was also introduced in the 1930s. American printers Leonor Color and Sam Golden developed acrylic paint and marketed it in 1949 under the brand name "Magma". This paint was diluted with turpentine, it was used by abstract artists: Rothko, Kooning, Barnett Newman, Kenneth Noland and Maurice Louis.
